If Your Gameboy Could Cry ****
When you first start playing All Of This Is Temporary you might recoil a bit from the simple (and dare I say) classic beeps that pop from your speakers like a toy from the 1980's but whatever you do, don't stop the cd. Quickly old meets new and mechanical meets organic as layers emerge and the once cheesy bleeps and blops from childhood video game memory become the sophisticated instruments of a finely tuned orchestra. Suddenly your old abandoned Atari has a heart, a soul, and a desperate need to sing its abstract longings in surprisingly seductive songs. Caly is not the first to incorporate the video game sounds of old into new music compositions but she's one of the first to do it in a way that is completely accessible and moving. I for one will be anxiously waiting to hear what she does next.
