The Sensorium is an experiment in multi-dimensional sound, whereby the placement of speakers and control of discrete channels and levels within a normal 5.1 surround sound system have been adjusted for a specific environment to create a rich, engulfing, and occasionally disorienting audio experience. The Sensorium's loop of several original pieces range from one to eight minutes long and includes a mix of environments- the recreation of a hail storm or a train ride in Budapest, for example- as well as more experimental audio pieces created using synthesizers, vocals, and other sources.
The Sensorium was developed originally as an addition to the CONvergence science fiction convention in 2002 and has since become a perennial favorite.
It was also installed as part of the 2007 Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Arts.
